How airdrops reach an XRP Ledger wallet

A token on the XRP Ledger can only be held by an account that has opened a trust line for it: a line that says “I accept this token from this issuer” (xrpl.org). So a project can only airdrop its token to accounts that already hold a line for it, and the tokens then appear on their own. There is nothing to claim.

Some airdrops reward XRP holders with a token on another chain. Midnight’s Glacier Drop took a snapshot on 11 June 2025 of wallets holding about $100 or more in XRP and seven other coins, and holders claimed through Midnight’s own claim site (CoinDesk). A genuine claim of that kind proves you own an address; it never needs you to send XRP.

What a fake airdrop looks like

A claim site. “Claim your XRP rewards” behind a link from X, a DM or a memo. The page asks you to connect and sign; what you sign hands over the account. This is how the drainer campaigns in our drainer investigation worked.
An incoming check or escrow from a stranger. It shows a large amount and a website in its memo. The XRP is not yours to take; the website is the trap.
A token you never asked for, with a website in its name. It has no market value, and its only purpose is to send you to that site.
A request to open a trust line “to qualify”. A trust line to an unknown issuer gains you nothing and locks 0.2 XRP of your balance until you remove it.
