XRPL vs XRP - What's the Difference?

People use XRPL and XRP interchangeably but they aren’t the same thing. The cleanest analogy: XRPL is to XRP what Ethereum is to ETH.

The One-Line Answer

XRPL is the blockchain — the XRP Ledger. XRP is the native cryptocurrency that lives on it. Every XRP transaction happens on the XRPL; the XRPL hosts XRP plus thousands of other tokens, NFTs, AMM pools, and DEX order books.

Why the Confusion

Two reasons. First, XRP was the first and only asset on the XRPL for years — so the ledger was often just called “XRP” by default. Second, “Ripple” the company, “Ripple” the original consensus protocol, and “XRP” the asset got mixed up in early marketing. The rebrand to “XRP Ledger” sharpened the distinction but the casual usage still lingers.

Why the Distinction Matters

  • When you hold XRP, you’re holding one asset. The XRPL hosts thousands of others (RLUSD, SOLO, meme tokens, stablecoins, tokenized real estate). Your wallet can hold any of them through trustlines.
  • When you build on XRPL, you’re not building on XRP — you’re using the broader protocol. That means the native DEX, AMMs, NFTs, payment channels, and escrows are all available to you.
  • Fees are paid in XRP. Every transaction on the XRPL — whether it moves XRP or a token — burns a small amount of XRP as a fee. You need a small XRP balance to use the network at all.
  • Reserve is in XRP. Activating an account requires 1 XRP reserve; each trustline or other owned object needs 0.2 XRP reserve. These are refundable but locked while active.

What People Actually Mean

“XRP price” = the market price of the XRP asset. “XRPL transaction” = a transaction on the ledger (could be an XRP send, a token swap, or an NFT mint). “XRPL DEX” = the on-chain order book and AMM built into the ledger. “XRP vs RLUSD” = two separate assets on the same ledger. “Buy XRPL” usually means buy XRP the asset — you can’t buy the network itself.

TLDR

XRPL is the rails. XRP is one of the things that rides on those rails — the most important one, because fees and reserves are paid in XRP, but not the only one. If you’re new, start with What Is XRPL Crypto for the ledger, or How to Buy XRPL Tokens if you want to trade the assets hosted on it.
