XRPL DeFi Ecosystem

On most chains, decentralised finance is code someone deploys. On the XRP Ledger it is part of the ledger: one exchange with order books and AMM pools, stablecoins, escrow and more, the same rules for everyone and no contract of anyone’s to trust.

What is built in, and since when

  1. 2012

One exchange inside the ledger from its first version; trades between two tokens can also pass through XRP.

  2. 2017

XRP locked until a time or condition; streams of payments settled at once.

  3. 2020
    Checks

A payment the recipient cashes later, up to a limit.

  4. 2024

Issuers may take tokens back; automated pools trade beside the order books; on-ledger price feeds.

  5. 2025

Stronger issuer controls, vouched-for accounts, and a second kind of token.

  6. 2026

Tokens can be escrowed too; order books only credential holders can trade on.

Each switched on by an amendment the validators voted for; the dates are when it took effect.

Still waiting: vaults and lending are written into the server software but not switched on (where the vote stands).

How it differs from DeFi on Ethereum

  • No contracts to trust. The exchange, pools and escrow are the ledger’s own rules, so there is no third-party code to be exploited and no token approvals to drain.
  • One shared exchange. Every swap fills from the order books and the pool together; there is no router to choose.
  • No buying a place in line. Transaction order inside a ledger is shuffled, not auctioned; the fee has a 10-drop minimum that rises only when the network is busy.
  • Narrower. Only what the protocol supports exists: no general-purpose contracts on the main ledger, so no on-ledger derivatives, and lending only once it is switched on.

Questions

Does the XRP Ledger have DeFi?
Yes, built into the ledger rather than deployed as contracts: an exchange with order books and AMM pools, stablecoins, escrow, checks and payment channels. On-ledger lending is written but not switched on yet.
Does the XRP Ledger have smart contracts?
Not general-purpose ones on the main ledger. Its financial features are part of the protocol itself; programmable contracts exist on a sidechain (the XRPL EVM sidechain) and on Xahau, a separate network.
Can I lend or borrow on the XRP Ledger?
Not yet on the ledger itself: lending and vaults are built into the server software but have not been switched on by the validators.
