XRP Cold Wallet: Which Hardware Wallets Hold XRP
A cold wallet keeps the key that signs your XRP on a device that never hands it to a phone or a website. Seven makers list XRP: Ledger, Trezor, Tangem, Keystone, DCENT, Ellipal and SafePal.
Hardware wallets that hold XRP
| Maker | Devices | Used with |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger | Nano Gen5, Nano X, Flex, Stax | The Ledger Wallet app (formerly Ledger Live) |
| Trezor | Safe 3, Safe 5, Safe 7, Model T | The Trezor Suite app |
| Tangem | Tangem cards | The Tangem app, or Xaman with a Xaman Tangem card |
| Keystone | Keystone Essential and Pro | XRP Toolkit, signing through QR codes instead of a cable |
| DCENT (formerly D’CENT) | DCENT hardware wallets | The DCENT app |
| Ellipal | Titan 2.0, X Card | The ELLIPAL app: Titan 2.0 by QR code, X Card by an NFC tap |
| SafePal | S1, S1 Pro, X1 | The SafePal app: S1 and S1 Pro by QR code, X1 over Bluetooth |
Each maker’s name links to the page where it lists XRP. Trezor’s page states it plainly: “XRP is supported on all Trezor Safe Family and Trezor Model T devices.”
Before you move XRP onto one
- A new address needs 1 XRP to exist. That is the XRP Ledger’s base reserve, and it stays locked in the account. Each trust line or other item you add locks 0.2 XRP more, returned when you remove it (xrpl.org: Reserves).
- Send a small amount first. Check it arrived on the device’s address before you send the rest.
- No destination tag into your own wallet; always one into an exchange. An exchange pools many customers in one address and tells them apart by the tag.
- Keep the recovery phrase on paper or metal. A phrase in a phone note, a photo or a cloud backup is no longer cold.
- Tokens need a trust line. To hold an XRP Ledger token such as RLUSD, the wallet must open a trust line to its issuer; Tangem’s help center shows how in its app. What a trust line is: XRPL trust lines explained.
Phone apps are not cold wallets
Xaman keeps the key in the phone app. With a Xaman Tangem card the key stays on the card instead, and Xaman signs with it. Xaman’s help page on Tangem cards also describes a “Tangem Backup” xApp for setting up a second card as a backup.
DCENT sells a fingerprint hardware wallet and also a phone-only App Wallet. The App Wallet is not a cold wallet: its key lives in the phone. We examined how it signs in Inside D’CENT’s App Wallet.
Using a hardware wallet on xrpl.to
On xrpl.to you can connect a Ledger over USB or Bluetooth and sign swaps and payments in the browser; the key stays on the device. Open the wallet with Connect, then Continue with Ledger. It works in browsers that can reach a Ledger directly, such as Chrome and Edge on a computer.
Questions
What is the best cold wallet for XRP?
Every wallet in the table holds XRP. Choose by the app you want to manage XRP in, which is the last column of the table. Keystone, the Ellipal Titan 2.0 and the SafePal S1 sign through QR codes instead of a cable.
Is Xaman a cold wallet?
No. Xaman keeps the key in the phone app. With a Xaman Tangem card, the key stays on the card instead.
Does a new cold wallet need XRP to start?
Yes. A new XRP Ledger address must receive at least 1 XRP before it exists, and that 1 XRP stays locked as its base reserve.
Do I need a destination tag to send XRP to my cold wallet?
No. Your hardware wallet address is yours alone, so no tag is needed. When you send XRP to an exchange, use the tag the exchange gives you.
