XRP is the native digital currency of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), launched in 2012 by developers David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto. Built as a faster, more sustainable alternative to Bitcoin, XRPL uses the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm enabling 3-5 second transaction confirmations and up to 1,500 transactions per second with minimal fees. The ledger features a built-in decentralized exchange for trading cryptocurrencies and fiat-issued tokens. Of the 100 billion XRP created, approximately 55 billion were placed in escrow with 1 billion released monthly. The XRP Ledger Foundation, launched in 2020 with over $6.5 million in donations, promotes ecosystem development. Ripple Labs, led by CEO Brad Garlinghouse, has championed XRP adoption for cross-border payments. In July 2023, Ripple won a landmark SEC lawsuit establishing that programmatic XRP sales are not securities, providing crucial regulatory clarity for the cryptocurrency industry.
