Artist bio: Charles Meynier (1763 or 1768, Paris – 1832, Paris) was a French painter of historical subjects in the late 18th and early 19th century. A contemporary of Antoine-Jean Gros and Jacques-Louis David, Meynier's career flourished during this period. Biography: The son of a tailor, Meynier received early artistic training from Pierre-Philippe Choffard. He later studied under François-André Vincent, a prominent painter who rivaled Jacques-Louis David. Though Meynier placed second in the 1789 Prix de Rome competition (Girodet won), he still secured a coveted spot at the Académie de France à Rome. Returning to Paris in 1793, Meynier contributed designs for the bas-reliefs and statues adorning the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and the Paris Bourse. In 1816, Meynier achieved the honor of becoming a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Three years later, he was appointed as a teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts. Sadly, both Meynier and his wife succumbed to cholera in 1832. Artistic Achievements: While historical records differ slightly on the exact year, Charles Meynier was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1789. He later received membership in the esteemed Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1816. Primarily a history painter, Meynier's grand decorations graced the ceilings of the Louvre (1819 and 1822). Additionally, he produced numerous paintings glorifying the legend of Napoleon, many of which are currently housed at the Château de Versailles. Early Training and Artistic Rivalry: With the financial support of his brother, Meynier Saint-Phal, a renowned actor at the Comédie-Française, Charles Meynier entered the studio of François-André Vincent. Notably, Vincent was a key rival of the influential Jacques-Louis David. This artistic rivalry even extended to the students, with David's pupils referring to Vincent's studio as the "atelier of the wigs" – a term associated with royalists or conservatives during that period.
