Study for “In the Woods, Evening”, Alexandre Séon

Collection: Cleveland Originals

In this drawing of nymphs holding lyres, Alexandre Séon hoped to depict, in his words, “the spirit of the forest.” He was inspired by fairy-tales he heard as a child about the woods near the remote village where he grew up. By applying colored pencils to a roughly textured sheet of paper, Séon evoked the hazy tones of twilight and gave the sheet a dreamlike tenor."fun_fact": "This drawing relates to a painting that was exhibited to critical acclaim at the 1894 Société nationale des Beaux-Arts—an important avant-garde exhibition—but is lost today." Artist Bio: Alexandre Séon (1855-1917) Early Life and Training Alexandre Séon was a French Symbolist artist, illustrator, and decorator born in Chazelles-sur-Lyon, Loire in 1855. He died in Paris in 1917. Séon studied at the Beaux-Arts schools in both Lyon and Paris. In 1891, he became a student of the influential artist Puvis de Chavannes, with whom he later collaborated. Séon also developed a close association with Joséphin Péladan and his Rose-Croix Salon. Notably, he designed the frontispiece for Péladan's 1891 novel l'Androgyne. Artistic Career Coming from a merchant family, Séon enjoyed a peaceful childhood surrounded by rural culture. These early experiences would later influence his artistic creations as a painter. While studying at the Lyon Academy of Fine Arts, Séon also practiced decorative arts and ornamental design for the Lyon textile industry. In 1877, he moved to Paris to study with Henri Lehmann. During this time, he met and befriended other artists such as Georges Seurat, Alphonse Osbert, and Edmond Aman-Jean. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1891 when Séon became a student and collaborator of Puvis de Chavannes. He would work with de Chavannes for the next ten years, being significantly influenced by his mentor's style. Recognition and Style Starting in 1879, Séon exhibited his work in various galleries and rose to prominence as a figure within the Symbolist movement. He also served as a drawing instructor in the city of Paris from 1881 to 1915. Around 1890, Séon's work began to reflect the influence of Seurat's pointillist technique. With the help of art critic and theorist Alphonse Germain, Séon adapted this technique to create a form of Neo-Impressionism that could effectively convey his idealistic aspirations. In 1892, Séon participated alongside Péladan and Antoine de la Rochefoucauld in the founding of the Rose-Croix Salons (Rose-Croix symbolist exhibitions). He remained a loyal participant in these exhibitions throughout his career. Themes and Legacy Séon's complex and idealistic works combined poetic inspiration, reverence for pure forms, theoretical concerns, and social commentary. Despite receiving few formal commissions, Séon's decorative ambitions were on display in his panels for the city of Courbevoie. He was also a writer, authoring books on the "division perspective du ton" (division of tonal perspective) and "la symbolique de la ligne et des teintes" (the symbolism of line and color). A friend of Georges Deherme, founder of the "universités populaires" (popular universities), Séon created affordable lithographs, organized tours of the Louvre Museum for workers, and participated in the Palais du peuple (Palace of the People) movement. In addition to his paintings, Séon illustrated esoteric works, designed emblems for the Rosicrucians, and created book covers for the works of Joséphin Péladan.
