Enjoying a day off today, I decided to include Mr. Christopher Columbus in the mix. It's both Indigenous Peoples' Day and Columbus Day in the United States. However, for many Indigenous peoples, Columbus Day is a contentious holiday. Rather than celebrating Columbus as a discoverer, they view him as a colonizer whose arrival triggered the forceful appropriation of land, ultimately resulting in widespread suffering and the loss of Indigenous ways of life. For me, it's a day for reflection and learning, plus the added bonus of a paid day off work! 😄
